Skills Canada-Alberta

My culinary career got its true official start at the 2008 Skills Canada Alberta provincial competition. Here's the story:

As a shy, uncertain 17 year-old cook (see photo!) I signed up to showcase my cooking skills in front of the industry’s top professionals. I secretly wanted to drop out the week before, fearing I'd embarrass myself. Nevertheless, with incredible support from my long-time coach and mentor Randy Kozak, I gave it my all... and the food turned out pretty good! I was shocked to win a bronze medal at that event (far exceeding my own expectations) and I was instantly hooked on the rush of pursuing and achieving an ambitious goal.

I went to the restaurant supply store the very next day, stocked up on my first set of professional tools, and began my job search to get started in a local restaurant and accelerate the path to become a top chef.

Over the years - across cooking various jobs, international competitions, post-secondary experience, and entrepreneurship - I've has never lost sight of how it felt to take part in that first Skills / Compétences Canada event, and how it set the trajectory for everything to come in my career.

Another mentor, Stan Townsend, recruited me to the committee and allowed me to judge the events. I jumped at the chance to help plan and run the annual competitions. I had the opportunity to coach many students and watched with pride as some took the podium, most of them easily surpassing my own talent and skill. I've built meaningful relationships with so many dedicated volunteers, alumni, and staff within the Skills world, uniting over a shared enthusiasm for helping students reach their full potential. I watched and learned from chefs like Ian Campbell, who showed me the importance of empathy, respect, and humour in helping students learn and grow.

It has been an incredible journey that's shaped the person I am today. That is why it is such a privilege to join the Board of Directors for Skills Alberta this past month, and see this journey come full-circle. This organization is made up of some of the most passionate folks I've ever met. Each year they make an impact on the lives and careers of thousands of young Albertans who are just beginning their journey in the skilled trades - 30 years and counting!

Thank you to Chris Browton, Raymond Massey and the team for welcoming me on board - I can't wait to contribute to the important work you're doing. Learn more about Skills AB at https://skillsalberta.com
